TNG Top 50 Rankings: Week 11
Top 5 pulling away, new team in the top 10, another up 43 spots in last two weeks
The top of the rankings again held steady while a group of teams made moves up into the 30s, positioning themselves to make a run for the top 25 in the latter part of the season.
If we look at the tiers that have developed within the rankings, we see that the teams rated #1 through #6 are within 320 Elo points, or roughly within 13 points, of each other, while less than 250 Elo points, or 10 points on the field, separates #7 through #25. That same 250 Elo spread covering #7 to #25 also covers all of the teams rated #26 through #46. Any two teams within any of those tiers could beat one another on any given day, despite their apparent separation in terms of how we typically perceive a set of rankings.
Remember, in an Elo ratings system, teams are not docked at all if they win, but the amount of points they gain will be less if they underperform relative to their expected margin of victory. At the same time, teams that lose cannot gain Elo points. Much of the movement that we see in the rankings is just due to teams’ gains or losses relative to those around them.
Here are the main takeaways from the new set of rankings:
According to Elo, the top 5 has really separated from the chasing pack and it’s all very familiar names. The only team that was in this conversation, preseason and fell out is DeSoto.
-Prosper has entered the chat- The Eagles have been knocking on the door of the top 10 seemingly all season long and their 29-24 win over #10 Allen finally crashed the door down.
Three familiar risers with sizable moves in the rankings, #27 Lewisville, #28 Fort Bend Ridge Point, and #29 Katy Tompkins continue to not only win, but outperform expectations.
#31 Houston Memorial, once again, made another big jump (12 spots) in the rankings following their 30 spot jump last week. That’s back to back weeks of exceeding expectations in upsetting Jersey Village and Houston Stratford.
Dickinson dropped 17 spots following their loss as 40 point favorites vs. Clear Creek! Houston Stratford fell 13 spots following their upset loss to Houston Memorial.
Without further ado, here’s the new TNG Top 50 for Week 11:
